San Antonio Area
Progressive Action Coalition

After an extended hiatus, the SAAPAC Executive Committee met , February 9, 2013, and voted to adjust future SAAPAC functions and become more action and issue focused.

Consequently, we will no longer be hosting monthly seminars, but will instead direct SAAPAC energy and resources to one political and social issue at a time and to present one large, annual community informational event in support of this selected issue.

WE are excited about resurrecting SAAPAC and reorganizing its progressive base.

We agreed to make campaign finance reform our focus issue and, as a first step, join forces with Texans United to Amend – TUTA - an affiliate of the national grassroots organization, Move to Amend.

As you may know, Move to Amend has successfully passed resolutions in 11 state legislatures and nearly 500 cities and municipalities across the nation, in support for a constitutional amendment to reverse the SCOTUS Citizens United decision, stating simply that corporations are not people and that campaign contributions do not qualify as free speech.

While this 28th Amendment, introduced in the House of Representatives Feb, 12, 2013, will not magically secure campaign finance reform, it is an important first step in defining what separates individual constitutional rights from economic privilege and power and a first step limiting the corroding influence of corporate power in public policy.

Read the proposed
Constitutional Amendment here.

At this time, Texans United To Amend has secured introduction of a Texas Senate Resolution SCR2, sponsored by Senator Rodney Ellis, that is currently under review in the State Affairs Committee.

Our own Sen. Leticia VanDePutte serves on that committee and will co-sponsor the resolution and work to get it through committee and to a floor vote.

We are currently in search of a new webmaster for the SAAPAC website and will update as soon as possible.
